Perhaps you are wondering how best to prepare for Physics in the GAMSAT. In this article we will cover the best approaches and the GAMSAT Physics concepts that you should be ticking off in your study.

First things first, don’t give up on Physics! So many people just decide that are not going to put their time and energy into physics preparation because they read the ACER book and it it says physics is 20% off the exam.

This isn’t actually the case. At least 30-50% of the GAMSAT exam have shades of physics elements in them. Yes, there is perhaps 10-20% of pure physics questions that are obvious and not too high-level reasoning questions like:

• “how many coulombs does xyz electron hold?”
• “how much forces does this particle get as it moves through a field?”.

There are a small number of these questions and they are easy to get right.

However, the way you think in GAMSAT physics could be about things like torques around the joint. And these questions will be pretty common, because muscles attach a distance from the joint. To add to that there are multiple muscles that are moving, and making it quite a complicated, reasoning-based question. So if one is trying to write a GAMSAT Physics question, it would be something about the wrist or elbow or the knees. So yes, you should be studying Physics!

The thing is, it’s a matter of ticking off GAMSAT Physics concepts as you study them. There are no 3-step-approaches, no tricks, so if you do the drills and you start understanding it, it really pays off. It links well with the math that you are doing, so you do a heap of unit conversion, different units of force, energy, work, momentum, etc.

If you are foreign to physics, it can feel very scary because you don’t even understand any of the basics. I think that’s where you have to graduate your approach. You might want to start with an Year 11 or 12 physics, at a low level. That’s what we do in our GAMSAT bridging courses. We start on a very low level then we build it up.
